About my research…

My research interests lie in three primary areas, and build on my years of professional practice consulting as a landscape architect and heritage planner. First, I am focused on the topic of cultural landscapes and how they evolve to meet changing needs through new design interventions. Second, I focus on the creation of neighbourhood driven, low cost / high impact public space projects in post-war suburban communities, and third, I study open space systems associated with contemporary housing developments, specifically courtyard housing, and 'shared outdoor space'.

How my research improves life…

All of my research interests converge on questions that relate to the strengthening and enrichment of community life. What role does the interpretation of history play in nurturing a community’s sense of place and identity? What are the most effective models to create a cherished and vibrant public realm in economically disadvantaged auto-dependant areas? What role do shared open spaces (courtyards for example) play in building a sense of neighbourliness, and in raising children in cities?
