Description of the Area/Topic of Research
The position has a primary focus on the evaluation of health policies using quantitative and causal inference methods, including quasi-experimental designs applied to large administrative and population-based datasets. Core substantive areas may include:
- Substance use policy (tobacco, vaping, cannabis, and opioids)
- Pharmaceutical policy, including national pharmacare
- Aging policy, including the economics of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia
The position also offers opportunities to engage in health technology assessment, including cost-effectiveness analysis and discrete choice experiments, depending on interests and expertise.
Description of Lab/Group/Area
The postdoctoral scholar will work with Dr. Hai Nguyen (Professor and Canada Research Chair - Tier 1) within the Department of Economics and Finance at the University of Guelph. The research program is grounded in applied health economics and health policy evaluation, with a strong emphasis on quasi-experimental and economic evaluation methods using large administrative and population-based datasets. The position offers opportunities to contribute to policy-relevant research and to engage with collaborators in health and policy fields, alongside strong mentorship and support for independent research development.
General Outline of Duties
- Conduct grant-funded research and policy-relevant analyses leading to peer-reviewed publications
- Engage in collaborative research, with opportunities to develop and pursue independent research projects
Required Qualifications
- PhD in Economics, Health Policy, Health Services Research, Epidemiology, or a related quantitative discipline (completed by start date)
- Strong quantitative skills (e.g., causal inference, applied econometrics, or epidemiologic methods)
- Experience with administrative data and/or population survey data
- Expertise in cost-effectiveness analyses and/or discrete choice experiments is an asset
Start Date & Duration of Appointment: July 1, 2026; Two years, with the possibility of extension
Anticipated Hours/Days of Work (at time of posting): 35 hours/day (full-time)
Salary Information: $70,000 salary + $13,650 benefits (19.50% benefit rate) = $83,650 total
