Words of Wisdom...

When an airline asks you to sign a waiver for your guitar just scribble quickly in hard to read handwriting "no thank you" and hand it back. Later if they damage your equipment you can claim you did not understand why they handed that waiver to you.

Why did you choose to complete your graduate studies in your program at the University of Guelph?

It was in keeping with the prophecy at my birth.

A bit about your path...

Steep.

A bit about the work you are doing here...

Life itself is an improvisation, random events unfolding. The work I am doing is tricky putting in words, which is an ongoing consideration/complication. We might say I am trying to shake my own hand.

How do you think the work you are doing can potentially improve life?

Perhaps my work sparks others to view a value towards improvisation, that it is in fact the natural state of things or to quote my favourite fortune cookie, woe be the person who believes everything is here to stay.

Your academic relationship with your advisor...

My advisor, Daniel Fischlin has been terrific. Always there for all of us in the program. In academia, not everyone I encounter manages so many things with the same dependability as Daniel. I recommend Canada Post place his name on a stamp.

What do you plan to do after graduation?

Find a job.

Do you have any advice for someone who would like to follow in your footsteps?

It is worth looking at the Sunshine List and noting your own professor's salary. Probably between 130k and 200k yet they often talk to students as though they are down for the revolution.

Tell us something about you, beyond being a grad student.

I shovel snow with my eyes open.

What is it like to be a graduate student at Guelph?

Like shovelling snow with eyes closed.

What do you like best about U of G campus?

Outrageous parking fees.
