Toochukwu's advice for someone considering grad school

My advice to prospective grad students or anyone aiming to follow a similar path is to approach every challenge and opportunity with an open mind and unwavering determination. Graduate school is more than just gaining knowledge; it’s about realizing your true potential, pushing your boundaries, and turning your passion into something real.
Surround yourself with inspiring individuals like mentors, peers, and instructors because their guidance and support will be essential throughout your journey. Don’t shy away from taking risks or pursuing bold ideas; some of the most fulfilling experiences come from stepping beyond your comfort zone.
Remember, success isn’t solely about what you accomplish, but also about how you grow during the process. Keep in mind that "your number one enemy is your last accomplishment." This perspective will encourage you to keep striving for more and avoid complacency.
Stay curious, stay persistent, and above all, stay passionate about your work. If you can do this, your journey will lead not only to academic success but also to personal fulfillment and a meaningful impact on the world around you.

Why the MSc Management at Lang?

Having graduated from the Department of Accountancy at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where I held various leadership roles, including Deputy Speaker and Speaker of the Student Congress, as well as President of the department, I developed a deep passion for leadership and management. After gaining experience as a professional accountant, I wanted to further my knowledge in these areas, and the University of Guelph's Lang School of Business and Economics was my top choice. I pursued this opportunity, and it has been a rewarding experience. Given the chance to choose again, I would undoubtedly select the University of Guelph.

Tell us about your path to Guelph

I've been fortunate to have the support of many people who have helped me get to where I am today. My wife has been my constant source of strength and encouragement, while my family has always provided unwavering support. Past academic professors and previous supervisors have guided me with their wisdom, shaping my professional journey. Friends and mentors have offered invaluable advice and perspective along the way.

One philosophy that has driven me is the belief that "your number one enemy is your last accomplishment." This mindset has kept me focused on continuous growth, pushing me to strive for more and not become complacent. It’s taken dedication, perseverance, and the collective support of these key individuals to achieve the success I’ve experienced.

A bit about the work you are doing here

The work I’m engaged in here is both challenging and rewarding, and it’s been greatly supported by the abundant resources provided by the University. Having access to everything I need has allowed me to focus deeply on my research and the projects I’m developing. The presence of globally recognized scholars at the University of Guelph has been a continual source of inspiration, encouraging me to push the boundaries of my work.

One of the most exciting aspects of my current work is the development of prototypes that have the potential to make a significant impact. For example, I’ve been leading the development of GreeNET Systems with my team. This platform is designed to foster collaboration, training, and e-commerce within the sustainability sector of the business environment. Although still in the prototype stage, GreeNET Systems holds promise for transforming how businesses engage with sustainability.

Another major project in development is a seed funding initiative aimed at raising $3 million from angel investors and venture capitalists to bring GreeNET Systems to life. This project has been particularly exciting because it has allowed me to explore innovative funding strategies and connect with potential investors who share our vision.

Additionally, I’ve been working on a prototype for a new product, the Product Locator with my team for Walmart Group. This tool is designed to enhance customer experience by helping them easily locate products within the store. While it’s still in development, the feedback and potential applications have been incredibly encouraging.

The supportive nature of the instructors here has made these developments possible, providing guidance and insight that has been invaluable. These projects, though still in their early stages, represent the culmination of my efforts and the rich learning environment at the University of Guelph

How do you think your research can potentially improve life?

I've been working on innovative prototypes that have the potential to make a real difference in both sustainability and consumer experiences. For example, the GreeNET Systems platform, which my team and I are developing, could revolutionize how businesses collaborate and adopt sustainable practices. By offering a dedicated space for training and e-commerce with a focus on sustainability, we hope to enable businesses to make more environmentally conscious choices, contributing to a healthier planet.

Another project, the Product Locator prototype for Walmart Group, aims to enhance the shopping experience by making it easier for customers to find products in-store. This tool could not only boost customer satisfaction but also improve store efficiency, leading to better service overall. The work we’re doing has the potential to create meaningful improvements in both business sustainability and consumer convenience, and I'm excited about the positive

Tell us something about you, beyond being a grad student.

Beyond being a grad student, I have a deep passion for football. Although I didn’t get the chance to play on a bigger stage, I’m determined to nurture and develop one of the world’s finest footballers in the future. I’m also very interested in business and am constantly on the lookout for genuine business ventures that can make a positive impact.

While I have a great love for Canada, my passion for my home country runs deep, despite the many challenges it faces. Both places hold a special place in my heart, and I’m committed to contributing to their betterment in my own way.
