I am engaged in questions of applied landscape ecology in rural and agricultural landscapes, including changes in landscape patterns and the consequences of those changes on biodiversity, water quality, and culture.

About my research…

Landscapes and culture change one another in an iterative loop. The most-pressing consequences of our times come from this relationship - at broad and fine scales - predominantly in rural areas but are experienced anywhere human populations are concentrated. I am engaged in questions of applied landscape ecology in rural and agricultural landscapes, including changes in landscape patterns and the consequences of those changes on biodiversity, water quality, and culture.

How my research improves life…

Humans live and eat the landscape - they consume space and resources, often distant from their homes, and in doing so change the ways that landscapes are structured, how they function, with consequences - both intentional and unintentional. Landscape architecture is a discipline that can imagine and test novel alternative landscape futures for the effects of different choices made by society, including effects on species abundance and diversity, climate-changing gases, and landscape perception and preference. When landscapes are changed with well-informed, evidence-based intent, the consequences are more likely to be acceptable to humans and other species.

Why you should choose Guelph…

Our landscape architecture graduate program offers rigorous research training within a skills- and knowledge-based, accredited professional degree program. This combination provides the breadth common to an accredited landscape architecture degree program, with a unique depth on a topic of the student is choosing. Recent student research has been published in top peer-reviewed academic journals, presented at international scholarly conferences, and won American Society of Landscape Architects research awards.
