Program

Animal Breeding & Genetics, PhD

Why I Chose Guelph…

I chose to complete graduate studies at the University of Guelph because of its reputation for agricultural sciences worldwide. Rated #1 in Canada in the field of agricultural sciences, I have the opportunity to work directly with industry professionals and leaders in genomic research. This access to outstanding resources has allowed me to acquire skills in new technologies and methodologies that are being implemented in the field of Animal Breeding and Genetics. In this highly competitive global marketplace, I know a Ph.D. from the University of Guelph will give me a competitive advantage.

About My Advisor…

I had an excellent professional relationship with my Ph.D. advisor, Dr. Flavio Schenkel. Dr. Schenkel is a role model and a mentor, and he taught me to be an independent thinker who is responsible for my own learning and intellectual growth. Dr. Schenkel treated me as a colleague in training, and was always available to offer suggestions and teach around issues with methodology and research processes when required. Dr. Schenkel is a world-renowned leader in genetics and genomics research in livestock breeding, and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to learn from him during my graduate career.

About the City of Guelph…

Guelph, known as "The Royal City", is a very clean environment with friendly people, and is consistently rated one of Canada's best places to live. The City of Guelph has a diversified economy, with many natural attractions and entertainment venues for things to do year round. Guelph transit also provides local transportation around the city, and offers many intercity connections to destinations such as Toronto, which is excellent for students!

About Campus…

I think the first thing people tend to notice about the University of Guelph campus is the squirrels! Although the squirrels are cute, the University of Guelph campus is just one of the most beautiful places to be, year round. Campus is characterized by its green lawns and blend of both modern and traditional architecture. However, my favourite thing about the Guelph campus is the friendly environment created among students, faculty, and staff. Everyone on campus has a positive attitude and is always willing to help. The environment on campus makes it easy to exchange ideas and personal opinions, making you feel like a vital member of the University "team"… or better yet: family.

About Student Services…

Writing services in the library is a lifesaver when it comes to writing a thesis. At each meeting, you can sit down with a writing expert and thoroughly review your work. These meetings allow you to approach your research with a different perspective, and I always left writing services feeling like I had  accomplished so much.
