Calculating Your Admission Average
Master's Degree
Last 2 years of full-time equivalent study:
- Canadian degrees
- Last 20 semester courses.
- We do not split a semester.
- We will not consider any less than 16 courses.
- All other degrees where the last 20 courses are not defined
- We determine the last 2 years or 4 - 6 semesters of full-time equivalent study .
- We do not normally split an admission average between two degrees, these situations are determined on a case by case basis.
Where the last 2 years of study are not shown, and for all Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent):
- We evaluate the entire degree available at the time of admission to find the cumulative gpa.
- We require that the student have a minimum of 70% or the equivalent to be eligible to apply.
Doctoral Degree
- Admission is based on the completed grades (to date) in the Master's program (if degree is not complete a condition will be present on the offer indicating completion of the degree is required).
- The grades from this degree will be calculated in the degree’s entirety.
- A minimum of a B average in a Master’s program is required for consideration to a doctoral program*.
- Bachelor’s degree calculation process is the same as above and must be included for all programs.
- Applicants who hold the DVM degree (or equivalent) and who are applying to the DVSc program must have achieved an overall average standing of at least high second-class honours ('B' standing) in their program.
General Information
- Some departments may have a higher admission average than the University minimum as well as additional admission requirements. See the Academic Programs page for access to details.
- If an applicant has completed additional degree(s) or completed coursework these transcripts must be assessed separately and the average from your most recently completed degree will be used for a basis for admission.
- Applicants who do not meet the minimum standards should review the upgrading webpage and contact the department to discuss their qualifications with the program of interest and potential courses to take to upgrade. Alternate admission criteria may apply in exceptional cases.
Grading Scale Conversion
The grading scale of the home institution is used to determine the admission average. The average is then translated into a University of Guelph alpha grade equivalent for admission purposes. (i.e. A, B, C).
- International Credential Evaluation Guidelines, developed in collaboration the Ontario University Registrar's Association (OURA) and UK ENIC is our guideline to determine international grade equivalency.
- UK ENIC is used to determine academic institution accreditation and equivalency in cases where we have no knowledge of the degree or institution.
- World Education Services (WES) / Education Credential Evaluators Inc. (ECE) / Canadian Graduate Schools evaluations are not accepted by the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and applicants should not use these services as an evaluative service for admission to graduate studies to the University of Guelph.
- We encourage international applicants to review the International Credential Evaluation Guidelines.
